The Meaning of Ahavah Rabbah
The second of the three blessings that surround the Sh'ma is Ahavah Rabbah (literally, "Great Love"). This blessing is recited immediately before the Sh'ma.
Ahavah Rabbah describes God loving Israel – the Jewish people – through the gift of the Torah. Like parents who love their children by giving them guidance and setting limits for them, God loves us by giving us a Torah that leads us toward moral action and that inspires our aspiration to live meaningful lives.Torah is the tangible symbol of God's love for us.
