CRAFTY

YouthGroups

The Cranston Area Federation of Temple Youth (CRAFTY) and CRAFTY Junior are the youth groups of Temple Sinai.

CRAFTY is a youth group for all local Jewish teenagers in the 9th to 12th grades. CRAFTY members choose, design and run all youth group events. Our emphasis is on having fun while we learn, make a positive difference in the community, celebrate Jewish holidays, and deepen our connection to the Jewish people throughout the world. CRAFTY is affiliated with the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY).

CRAFTY Junior is a youth group for teens and pre-teens in the 6th to 8th grades. CRAFTY Junior events occur about once a month during the school year and focus on Jewish cultural and religious learning, social action and strengthening a Jewish peer group for all participants.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What are the ages for the youth group?

A: We will have a junior youth group for grades 6-8 and a senior youth group for grades 9-12.

Q: What is the cost to participate in the youth group?

A: Junior youth group – the events will most likely be pay per event without annual dues. Senior youth group – there will be annual dues, with a portion allocated to the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY). Also, there may be additional costs associated with events. Usually the state, regional and national events do charge fees. Need-based scholarships for dues and event fees are available from the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund. Contact the Rabbi or Cantor for more information.

Q: What is the commitment if my child joins?

A: The participation can be completely up to your family – one event or every event! Your child can attend events only with Temple Sinai children or choose to attend functions locally or nationally with other youth group members. Leadership opportunities will also exist at CRAFTY, as well as at the regional and national level.

Q: Where will the events take place?

A: We envision that several events will occur at Temple Sinai. Other events may happen at other temples in the state or at off-site venues in the region. The possibilities are limited only by imaginations of the CRAFTY members. With the off-site events, we will need to coordinate transportation – this is also to be determined.

Q: How will my child stay informed of events?

A: CRAFTY events are announced in the Temple Scroll, in the Rabbi's weekly email, by e-mail sent specifically to CRAFTY students and parents, on the Temple website, and through social media and text messages.

Q: Who do I contact if I have questions?

A: For questions related to the overall Youth Group direction or feedback about our youth group advisor, please contact Stefanie Abbott (email: [email protected]). Or contact Rabbi Sol Goodman, Temple Sinai Director of Education (email: [email protected]; telephone: 401-942-3466).

Q: I would like to help, what can I do?

A: This is our favorite question. There are at least two ways you can assist: 1) We could certainly use assistance in planning and hosting events. As the students have ideas for programs, we will let you know what help they require. 2) Financial support is always welcomed to ensure that we are able to help the students make their programming ideas reality.
