B'neiMitzvah
Many parents describe the experience of seeing their child standing on the bimah as a bar or bat mitzvah as one of life’s most moving events. It is a moment in which parents rejoice in seeing their child make an important statement about his or her attachment to Judaism. Families remember past generations and feel connected to them. The entire Jewish community takes pride in having given a child a basic foundation for living a Jewish life.
Temple Sinai focuses on values, family and community at every step of the process that leads to a bar or bat mitzvah. For each of our children, we want this to be the experience of a lifetime that will lead to a lifetime of more Jewish experiences.
Becoming a bar or bat mitzvah at Temple Sinai is much more than an excuse for a party or for showing off Hebrew reading skills. It is an expression of our values. We emphasize that the service is not a performance – we do not pressure our kids to be perfect, rather we encourage them to make their experience meaningful. Each student chooses and completes a tzedakah project – aiding the needy, protecting the environment, serving the community, or working for justice – to demonstrate their commitment to a life of Torah through action.

Just as each child and each family is different, each service is different. The rabbi and cantor help each student to shine in his or her own way. We listen to the needs of each family and make sure that each family member is treated respectfully and everyone has the joy of celebrating a family milestone.
No service with a bar or bat mitzvah is a private function. The Temple community comes to celebrate with the family, delighting in all of our children. When young men and women stand on the bimah at Temple Sinai, they know that they are part of something larger than themselves, a community and a people that stretches back in time and around the world.
